ANS NGFP Meeting

Speical ANS Meeting Tuesday

Hey everyone!

We have another meeting tonight, Tuesday, October 6th. This meeting is not our regularly programmed monthly get-together: this is a special meeting for students interested in graduate school or are looking at fellowships. This meeting will feature guests discussing the US Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Graduate Fellowship Program (NGFP).

“The NNSA Graduate Fellowship Program is seeking highly motivated graduate-level students for one-year salaried (plus benefits) fellowships in nonproliferation technology and policy, research and development, nuclear safety, emergency response, and more!”

Please see the attached flyer here for more details.

This meeting will be held in Min Kao 524 on Tuesday, October 6th, at 7:30pm.

Local Section Dinner

The Local ANS section dinner meeting is next Tuesday, 10/13/15 at 5pm. Remember, students eat free! You can find all the details here, and please RSVP here.

Volunteers Needed

We need 4 volunteers for the Serpent User Group Meeting October 13th -16th. This is partially in Fall Break, so if anyone will be around and not going on the King’s Island/Cedar Point Trip, we need some more, especially on Friday! Email Greg Meinweiser (gmeinwei@vols.utk.edu) or Dr. Donovan (ddonovan@utk.edu) if you are interested in picking up a shift!

Volunteers do not need to be present for the entire conference. The schedule will likely be divided up into morning/afternoon shifts for Wed-Fri. If you’re able to volunteer, let us know what days you’re available for morning / afternoon! Thanks in advance to anyone able to help out!

T-Shirt and Dues

You can pay dues and pick up your T-Shirt at the monthly meeting (though likely not tonight). You can also pay in Pasqua 305b when our treasurer, Danielle McFall, is there.

Have a great day, and Go Vols!

NRC & Guest Speaker Tonight!

NRC & Guest Speaker Tonight!

ANS Meeting TONIGHT

Hey everyone!

Quick reminder! We have another ANS meeting tonight at 6:30pm (note the time change) in Min Kao 524.

Tonight’s meeting will feature a guest from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and a special guest speaker on personal finances during and after college! We hope to see you all there! (Oh, and free dinner, as usual).

One more thing – we are planning social events for the semester and want to gauge interest! Click here to vote! Our first event is October 18th – details here.

Nuclear Science Week

Please read the following message regarding NSW and volunteer opportunities!

Hi again everyone,

It has been a little while since I initially had people sign-up on the Volunteer interest sheet, but we have now finally gone live with our online Volunteer Sign-up sheet for Nuclear Science Week.  The signups can be found at the following link:

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0844AFAB23A1F85-nuclear

The signup sheet itself has a brief description of the available volunteer opportunities, and of course if you are looking for more details about NSW in generally, you can find it at:

http://www.nuclearscienceweek.org/

As a reminder, those that volunteer for a sufficient number of cumulative hours will have free access to the reception on 10/22/2015 which will be catered and have an open bar for those that are age eligible.  Currently, the required number of hours is 8 cumulative (doesn’t have to be all on the same day or consecutive hours), however this may be relaxed as we get closer to the actual event.

I encourage you to spread the word to any and all others who may be interested.  Volunteers do not have to be students, but it is preferred that they be somewhat knowledgeable of nuclear if they will be manning any informational sessions or booths.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me (gentryca@ornl.gov).  Look forward to seeing a lot of volunteer spirit!

Turnout to last week’s meeting with Dominion was
great! Plus, who can say no to free Zaxby’s chicken!
Have a great day, and Go Vols!

Hey everyone!

I would like to get a gauge of interest for each event. Please vote on any social events that pique your interest via the following Google Forum! Then, we can narrow down the list a little and start planning things! Click here to vote!
Also, we plan on visiting the Cumberland County Playhouse to see “The Foreigner” play on October 18th! Below is a list of details for this trip. This is a favorite play of mine…it is hilarious! If you wish to attend this event, please sign-up via the following link asap (no later than September 23rd – we need to purchase tickets)! Sign-Up here.

The Foreigner (Information)

  • October 18, 2015
  • Regular Cost – $26
  • Student Discount Cost – $12
  • Food – ~$10-15 (depending on the voted restaurant)\
  • Depart Pasqua at 13:00
  • Travel to Crossville, TN
  • Play begins at Cumberland County Playhouse at 14:30 (we gain an hour)
  • Dinner after the play around 17:00
  • Depart Crossville, TN at 18:00 (or whenever the dinner ends)
  • Arrive in Knoxville, TN at 20:00 (we lose an hour)
  • “All Charlie wants is a little peace and quiet. So, when he arrives at a fishing lodge in Georgia, it seems harmless enough to masquerade as a foreigner who can’t speak English. However, he soon realizes that people will say the most extraordinary things when they think no one can understand them, and what seemed like a serene getaway suddenly turns into a hornet’s nest of drama and intrigue. The Foreigner is wickedly clever and outrageously funny. Our most requested title returns for our 50th Anniversary Season!”
